P.E

"PE support our right to leisure, play and culture (Article 31) because we learn how to be active and use sport to play. It also helps our mental health!" - Duckmanton pupil

PE at Duckmanton Primary School

Our PE lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our 3 R's, our whole child approach to PE and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. Get Set 4 PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school. When appropriate, some lessons may be substituted for team teaching units delivered by external agencies as CPD opportunities. Teachers are able to adapt their lesson plans to suit the needs of their class if they feel the need to.

EYFS

We encourage the physical development of our children in the nursery and reception class as an integral part of their work. We encourage the children to develop confidence and control of the way they move, and the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills. Over the year, our nursery children will negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others; Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing; Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.

Whilst we try our best to ensure that PE lessons never change, there may be times when teachers need to swap or rearrange class PE slots.  Please ensure that your child has their kit in school at all times so that they can fully participate in their PE lessons. You can check your child's Class Dojo page for their regular PE lesson days.

PE kit should include:

  • Black PE shorts
  • A plain t-shirt in white or in your child's house colours (TrentRother or Derwent)
  • Pumps or sensible, clean trainers for outdoor sports

Children should remove earrings before school on PE lesson days. Those with recently pierced ears should bring plasters and apply them before their lesson. Long hair must be tied up before PE lessons.

Other jewellery and extreme hairstyles are not permitted as part of the school uniform policy.

Dance and Gymnastics lessons where children may use mats and larger apparatus require bare feet, shorts and t-shirt. This is to ensure strong grip and accurate foot placement which cannot be achieved when wearing footwear and ensure children are safe when moving at height. When PE lessons take place outside in colder weather, tracksuit bottoms and long-sleeved tops are permitted. Sports shirts (football, rugby etc) and shorts are not permitted in any PE lesson.

Children should ensure they have a water bottle in school on every school day but this is particularly important on PE days with the need to remain hydrated. This should contain water only and those who bring juice will be asked to empty and refill bottles once they arrive at school.

Children who are unable to take part in the physical elements of a PE lesson will still be expected to participate in Peer-Assessment and Theory based activities. Teachers should be informed by parents before the start of the school day in which the PE lesson takes place.

Swimming

Year 5 will attend swimming every Monday morning for the Autumn term. Information on coach and session times as well as appropriate swimming kits should be checked on the Y5 Dojo page. If for any reason, your child needs extra support with their swimming after their course has been completed, they will have the opportunity to go again in Year 6, to continue with their swimming progress.

Clubs

We try our hardest to provide clubs for all of our children. Staff and Qualitas provide clubs for our school throughout the school year.

Sone clubs change every half term to provide variety and provide all children the opportunity to participate in their preffered club.

Article 29 - Education should help develop a child’s personality, talents and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential.

All of our clubs are shared on Dojo.
