Science
Science promotes the natural curiosity that all children have and helps them to ask the big questions about the world. How did we get here? Why do the stars only come out at night? How do things work?
Take a look at what a year of Science looks like at Duckmanton Primary School:
At Duckmanton Primary School, our aim is to provide a Science education to all of our students which broadens their understanding of the world around them and challenges them to enquire and ask these big questions during their time at Primary School and beyond.
A subject focus on vocabulary helps students to acquire the language needed in order to broaden their understanding and think more deeply about the subject and make links across the curriculum such as Maths, Design & Technology as well as subjects which might challenge understanding such as RE and RSHE.
Science is a prominent subject across the school. To support the 2 curriculum hours dedicated to the subject each week, our learning environment continues to evolve to include working walls in every classroom as well as engaging outdoor learning spaces linked to our Chemistry, Physics and Biology learning topics.
Our school celebrates British Science Week every May with a hands on approach and whole school theme which parents are encouraged to join us for.
As a school, we embed the aims of the National Curriculum to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
